Urbanisation homework

Okay, some issues raised from the homework….

1.  In 1960 there were more of the world’s largest cities in MEDCs.  Today more of the world’s largest cities are in LEDCs.  The growth areas have been in South-east Asia.

2. The population in LEDCs has continued to grow due to a high birth rate and falling death rates.

3. The proportion of the population living in urban areas in LEDCs has grown.  This is known as urbanisation.

4. When you are describing graphs or pie charts YOU MUST USE FIGURES IN YOUR ANSWER!!!  When comparing two places of sets of data say …..X is 49% whereas Y is higher at 80%…..

5. The growth of population in urban areas in LEDCs has put pressure on housing, education services, doctors, jobs, waste disposal and led to conflict and crime.  How does this affect people’s lives in terms of adult literacy, income, safety, health?

6. Quality of life in shanty towns is poor.  Adult literacy is low, health is poor - life expectancy low, infant mortality high, standard of living is poor as people have low incomes and often work in informal jobs.

7.  How can the local authority help improve the following :- housing (materials, land it is built on, tenure, security), education (basic primary, secondary, adult and skills), healthcare (personal health and hygiene, sexual health, access to medicine, access to contraception), jobs (training, skills, access to jobs), transport (public transport to work, to visit family and friends).

8.  Who are the different groups of people living in the shanty town for whom life can be improved?  Elderly, young people, children, families, workers, criminals, drug users
